cE3c - Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes of the University of Lisbon


One Research Fellowship, for candidates with a Master degree, is open at the Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, for the project GREEN SURGE - Green Infrastructure and Urban Biodiversity for Sustainable Urban Development and the Green Economy/cE3c - Centro de Ecologia, Evolução e Alterações Ambientais (ex-Centro de Biologia Ambiental), FP7-ENV-2013- two stage proposal 603567-2, co-financed by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area: Biological/Environmental Sciences

2. Requirements for admission:
candidates must have completed a Master degree in biological/environmental sciences or related, have experience in animal survey techniques (preferably multi-taxa approaches), handling of spatial data, and knowledge on GIS techniques and r programming. They should further be familiar with the existing concepts of green infrastructures and ecosystem services, and be able to place results in the Mediterranean context. Driver license, team spirit, skills for autonomous work and availability for staying abroad in different time periods, are other requirements. The working language is English and candidates most prove their ability to write and expose ideas consistent with the scientific writing. Appropriate skills in Portuguese will further be an advantage. Candidates willing to develop a PhD thesis under this work are welcome.

3. Work plan: The context of the research includes the urban green infrastructures as well as trends in societal demands for services provided by these. Based on scientific literature, spatial databases, ecosystem-based research, and social methods the candidates will work closely together with cE3c team members involved in GREENSURGE and also in conjunction with other GREENSURGE partners. The approach is focal: a significant part of the work will consist of synthetizing available information and helping to reduce gaps in data and knowledge to assess biocultural diversity and biodiversity-based ecosystem services in urban green infrastructures in Lisbon and Almada cities.

4. Legislation framework: A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July. And also by the FCT, I.P. Fellowships Regulation of 2013 approved by Regulation No. 234/2012, of June 25, as amended by Regulation No 326/2013 of 27 August 2013, in force (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt)

5. Place of work: The work will be developed at the cE3c - Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes of the University of Lisbon, under the scientific guidance of Professors Margarida Santos-Reis, Otilia Correia and Cristina Branquinho.

6. Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 12 months and will begin on April 2015. The fellowship contract may be renewed eventually until the end date of the project, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. – 2013.

7. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to €980, according to table values of the fellowships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).

The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and, if not covered by any social protection scheme can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

8. Selection method: Candidates will be assessed by the quality of their CV (40%) and evaluation of relevant practical and theoretical knowledge (60%) which may require an interview (via skype is acceptable).

9. Selection Committee: Margarida Santos-Reis (President), Otilia Correia and Cristina Branquinho. Alternate members are Francisco Petrucci-Fonseca and Rui Rebelo.

10. Publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will become public, through a final grade ordered list which will be posted at the entrance hall of the Fundação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, located at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, C1 – 3rd floor, Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisboa, and the selected candidate will be notified by e-mail.

11. Deadlines: This call for applications is open from March 30 to April 10, 2015.
